Life of an Educator by Justin Tarte: Do new ideas thrive or die in your school?
Life of an Educator by Justin Tarte: Do new ideas thrive or die in your school?
This is one of the best written pieces that expresses how I myself feel about the school world.
Remember, I came from the church. I was a pastor 10+ years before moving to a second career in education. The church has its own hurdles when it comes to innovation that prevents many great ideas from ever seeing the light of day. A part of this frustration is why I left the church to pursue the education field in the first place.
The major difference between the environment in education and the environment in the church is that the church stifles innovation out of fear of losing members or offending the converted while education stifles innovation out of fear of leaders getting out of touch and becoming irrelevant. As Justin says in the blog I linked, we have "a surplus of hurdles and barriers that prevent, limit, and impede new innovative ideas from having any chance of success."
I accept Justin's challenge and will do my part "to work toward removing these hurdles and start embracing an education culture that celebrates new ideas."

Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds |
I'm reading Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds by Julie Lindsay and Vicki Davis as it was assigned through my EdTech Masters program and certain passages just jump off the page at me!
"Today, the boundaries of learning exist only between the known and unknown...The teacher sets the tone for learning by being a willing participant in the learning process." (p. 33)"Behind students engaged in learning is a teacher who is engaged in a personal learning journey." (p.34)
"Before you can build a bridge across the world, you have to build a bridge with your own administration." (p. 45)
"Delegating a new project entirely to the IT department may make sense, but excluding everyone else may kill the use of the technology in the long run. If you goal is successful adoption of technology, it may be more logical to take the slower route that involves teachers and students. You can't have a grassroots movement to use technology by involving only the 'trees' (administrative staff); rather, you must involve people at all levels of the organization." (p.49)
And my favorite one that I posted to my Twitter feed:
"The next best thing to being wise oneself is to live in a circle of those who are." C.S. Lewis #pln #edtech #txed

Guess Who is Presenting at ISTE 2014
Okay, so it's not that hard of a guess when I have sticker pasted on the header to my website, but it's me! This past week I was blessed to have my proposal for presentation accepted for ISTE 2014 in Atlanta. I cannot begin to describe how honored and excited I am for this opportunity!
My proposal was titled "iPad 201: Beyond Basics to Practical Classroom Applications" and will be about tools that teachers can use to connect to their students and parents with great ease! I will be demonstrating the app ShowMe as a tool that people can walk out and use right now which is followed by a very brief demo ofExplain Everything which is the "advanced" version of that app.
The main part of my presentation will be about Infuse Learning as a classroom tool to engage students in real-time and that will be followed by a presentation of NearPod.
If you are at ISTE comes see me in the BYOD sessions on July 1st from 10:15-11:15.
