Life of an Educator by Justin Tarte: Do new ideas thrive or die in your school?
This is one of the best written pieces that expresses how I myself feel about the school world.
Remember, I came from the church. I was a pastor 10+ years before moving to a second career in education. The church has its own hurdles when it comes to innovation that prevents many great ideas from ever seeing the light of day. A part of this frustration is why I left the church to pursue the education field in the first place.
The major difference between the environment in education and the environment in the church is that the church stifles innovation out of fear of losing members or offending the converted while education stifles innovation out of fear of leaders getting out of touch and becoming irrelevant. As Justin says in the blog I linked, we have "a surplus of hurdles and barriers that prevent, limit, and impede new innovative ideas from having any chance of success."
I accept Justin's challenge and will do my part "to work toward removing these hurdles and start embracing an education culture that celebrates new ideas."
